Sky Forest, CA

RATINGS: AMTB1-Not Suitable

Description

I love this place! It is conveniently located for a day trip from anywhere in So Cal, but fun to camp and stay a couple days. You earn your turns here but the climb is mellow. The trails are built so well that the vertical you gain, from what seems like an easy climb, is very surprising. The trails are usually immaculate and very well maintained. The staff is extremely helpful and cheery. Open year-round! Thursdays are Burger and beer for $15.

Staging

The parking lot is flat and paved. There are several handiman spots. The bathrooms, which are clean and nice with running water, are located inside. You’ll need to go through the office and up the hill to the right to access them.

Camping

The campground is located directly across the street. You can ride to/from the campsite, but I prefer to drive over so that I have my wheelchair and tools. There are wheelchair accessible sites but you will need to book way in advance to get them because they are the nicest and most popular. The only difference from all the other sites is that they are located at the top of the hill, close to the bathrooms. All the sites are paved. There is just a huge hill to go up to get to the bathrooms.

The bathrooms are ridiculously nice. They are almost too big. I think there are seven and two of them are ADA compliant. I never had to wait. The lock indicates when a bathroom is in use so no one knocks on the door when you are in there. When you enter there is bench and hooks for your things and a large granite sink with mirror. The shower in the ADA bathrooms has a fold down bench and shower nozzle on a hose. It, of course, is not reachable from the bench so you will need to detach it and place it on the hand rail where it can be reached once you transfer to the bench.

Campsites have a water spigot and electricity.

Trails

🟢Rim of the World - (aMTB1) This is the first trail you will ride. It is the up-line. It is 3/4 of a mile long and you gain about 300 vertical feet. You will need to Austin Powers some of the switchbacks, but its all wide open. The climb is mellow, but I couldn’t imagine lapping it without a power assist.

🟢Arrow (Upper) - (aMTB1x) Most riders will be fine on this trail but it does have advanced features. There is one wall ride with a small radius requiring a slow down. The exit gets slightly narrow.

⚫️Arrow (Middle) - (aMTB3) Home of the CorkScrew which is an extreme wood feature. I crashed on it. With practice I may be able to get it, but it’s all or nothing. You gotta go balls to the wall or not do it. Extremely advanced riders with support only.

🟢Arrow (Lower) - (aMTB1x) There is one off-camber A-frame feature at the beginning that comes after a sharp turn and is hard to get enough speed for without practice, but it has a ride around. Everything else has ride arounds too. The trail tightens up a little near the end.

🔴Beartracks Upline - Not Suitable for aMTB - I have not ridden this but looked t it. Doesn't look fun. Just climb up Rim of the World.

🔴Comet - Not Suitable for aMTB - I have not ridden this either but thats because i’ve been told not to. Mandatory gaps and skinnies.

🟢Dark Forest - (aMTB1) I rode this in 2018 and don’t remember any issues. XC trail. Some pedaling.

🔴Deck the Halls - Not Suitable fo aMTB - An XC alternative to Rim of the World that traverses back and forth adding a mile to the climb. I rode it and needed a ton of help.

Fantasy Forest - Not rated - I haven’t ridden this yet. Assuming its aMTB1 and meant for kids but I cant comment since I have no information.

🟢Knotty or Nice - (aMTB1) Apparently, at the time of this blog, its a little Knotty and needs work. This is a wide open bermy flow trail but it does have extremely technical off-shoots with skinnies that are not suitable for aMTB. Perfect for the beginner or rider in the lower extreme capability level who has ripper buddies with them. I rode this in 2018 and needed to use my rear brake to make some of the turns.

🟢Lower Arrow Connector - (aMTB1) Quick connector from Playground to Lower Arrow. Easy to miss. Look for it off to the left after passing under the bridge. Singletrack but most aMTBs will be fine.

🔴Lower Comet - Not Suitable for aMTB

🔵Neverland Jumpline - (aMTB2x) Everything is wide open, roll-able and has ride arounds. There is one bridge that is barely wide enough for me (I’m 38” tip to tip) and that is why this trail is rated as aMTB2. There is a whale tale wood feature after that bridge that looks scary but its no big deal. Go for it!

🟢Neverland Jumpline Connector - (aMTB1) Connector from the end of Neverland Jumpline back to Rim of the World Upline.

⚪️Pipeline Road - (aMTB0) Not an ADA pathway but a flat wide open fire-road

🟢Playground - (aMTB1+) Completely wide open with fun flowy rollers and berms. There is one little up-and-over wood feature with steep down ramp that I would avoid if I was in a front wheel drive bike. I went over over it slow and high-centered slightly. Make sure you have a little speed if you are going to do it. Avoid crossing the bridge at the end because it shoots you into an awkward narrow section. Go straight when you see the bridge unless you are an advanced rider.

⚪️Pond Road - (aMTB0) Not an ADA pathway but a flat wide open fire-road

🟢Reindeer Return - (aMTB1+) Flat pedal back to the Village at the bottom

🔵Sleigh Ride - (aMTB2x) Probably my favorite trail on the mountain. Very flowy with rollers and berms. No features but there is one right hand turn that I have had trouble with in the past. They have worked on it and it is much better, but it is slightly off-camber and you need speed for it. That’s why this trail gets an x for technical feature. Definitely bring a spotter the first time so you can scope it.

🔴Treeline - Not Suitable for aMTB - Traversing narrow XC trail. I rode it once. Needed a lot of help.
